How to Grow a Poinsettia Holiday Plant Year Round

Poinsettias are popular holiday plants known for their vibrant red and green foliage, making them a festive addition to any home. While they are often considered temporary decorations, with proper care, you can enjoy these colorful plants year-round. Follow these simple steps to keep your poinsettia healthy and thriving beyond the holiday season.

  1. Choosing the Right Poinsettia: Start with a healthy plant by selecting one with rich, dark green leaves and tightly clustered, unopened buds in the center. Avoid plants with drooping or yellowing leaves.

  2. Lighting Requirements: Poinsettias love bright, indirect light. Place your plant near a window where it can receive at least six hours of sunlight daily. Be cautious of direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. If you don't have the right light, all you need is a full spectrum grow light (perfect for corners and places where you don't get much sun.

  3. Temperature: Poinsettias prefer a warm environment, ideally between 65-75°F (18-24°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night. Avoid exposing them to drafts or sudden temperature changes.

  4. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again. Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure that the plant's pot has drainage holes.

  5. Humidity: Poinsettias appreciate a humid environment. You can increase humidity by placing a tray filled with water and pebbles near the plant or by regularly misting the leaves.

  6. Fertilizing: Feed your poinsettia with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.  Our custom-blended Poinsettia All Natural Plant Food will keep your plant happy throughout the season!

  7. Pruning: In spring, trim the plant back to encourage bushiness. Pinch off the top inch of new growth every few weeks until mid-August. This helps maintain a compact and attractive shape.

  8. Transition to Darkness: For poinsettias to produce their signature red bracts, they need extended periods of darkness. Starting in late September, place the plant in complete darkness for 14 hours each night for about 6 weeks. Cover the plant with a dark cloth or move it to a dark room during this period.

  9. Maintaining Color: After the darkness treatment, return the plant to its normal light schedule. To maintain the vibrant color, ensure it continues to receive bright, indirect light during the day.

  10. Year-Round Care: Continue regular care throughout the year, adjusting watering and fertilizing based on the plant's growth patterns. Poinsettias may not always display the intense red color seen during the holidays, but with proper care, they will remain healthy and attractive.  Use The Poinsettia Plant Guide to keep up with care tips.

Growing poinsettias year-round is a rewarding endeavor that allows you to enjoy the beauty of these festive plants beyond the holiday season. With attention to light, temperature, watering, and a little extra effort during the fall, you can keep your poinsettia thriving and bring cheer to your home throughout the year.  Happy Planting!
